About us

The Paul-Hindemith-Society in Berlin (PHG) was originally founded in 1966 as “Society of the Friends of the Public University for Music and Performing Arts in Berlin“ - Herbert von Karajan was a co-founder. Renowned personalities such as Elisabeth Grümmer, Joachim Tiburtius, Eberhard Finke and Wolfgang Boettcher (deceased 2021) are past chairpersons. Professor Roswitha Staege holds the chair at present.

Since the very beginning it has been the society’s objective to support highly talented students of music and the performing arts who need financial assistance. The funds for the scholarships come from membership fees and donations. In 2020, PHG awarded 22 students with scholarships amounting to about 33,000 €; in addtion, another 9 students received financial support for participation in master classes or to enter international competitions to further their development as musicians.

We are also committed to having Paul Hindemith’s works included in the concert programs of the university by making recommendations and suggestions.

The membership of our society numbered 262 in 2021.
Membership meetings are held once a year, usually in spring.
